King of Kale: From the Farm to the Road with Alberta singer-songwriter, Tanner James

I was just on my way home to Calgary from a two day stint with Alberta singer-songwriter, great friend and wonderful story teller, Tanner James when I wrote this. He and his group, The Best Intentions played the annual Taber Corn Fest this past weekend and I was brought along to study stage performance, movement and nutrition and craft content and get some insight . I learned that some artists just “get it” with regards to health. Tanner is one.

My mission is to bring about awareness to the industry. If I have learned anything over the years it’s way more effective to let others speak your message, so here goes. We spent some time in Tanner’s family garden this past weekend. I found it super interesting how he uses homegrown kale as one of his secrets to performance and general quality of life. Tanner says kale will rule the world, and here’s some of his rules in the world of taking care of yourself.

Kale Pucks

Tanner harvests about 3-4 big kale plants per summer. This yields on average about  100 kale pucks. What’s a kale puck? Well, you take a purée of kale, throw it into a muffin tray and whammy… Kale puck! I’ve got a video here where Tanner explains more in depth the whole process… So go take a peek. Click here —->

This is just a great way to keep the nutrients and incorporate some great home grown family plant based power foods into the diet.

Special thanks to Tanner for having me along for this trip. I will be releasing little bits from all 3 pillars of health; movement, nutrition and mindset as I compile them. Extra special thanks to his wonderful family…the Holthe’s for hosting me and showing such amazing hospitality. Small town Alberta just never ceases to amaze me. To hear Tanner, head to

He’s also releasing a book and has a few tricks up his sleeve for the upcoming fall and winter. Stay tuned. Some big stuff on the horizon. And be sure to eat kale, it’s clearly working for him!

Remember, you don’t have to be a rock star to start, but you have to start in order to become that rock star.

Stay sweet!

Ps. I crafted this little study guide for you. Be sure to share this blog and tell your friends for me if you’re digging’ it! Kale-4
